Last weekend was a busy one for winter recreation here. This year has seen so much more snowfall than last year (when there was close to none), that we are all reveling in snowmobiling, skiing and ice fishing.
A new connector trail into the Moose River Plains will mean snowmobilers (and in the summer, mountain bikers and hikers) will be able to access Inlet and Indian Lake from Raquette Lake. More than 225 ice fishermen competed for prizes in the Lake Pleasant Ice Fishing Derby and Oak Mountain was jamming as the President's Week school vacation wound down. Skiers in the backcountry probably found conditions a little sticky, but Lapland Lake Cross Country Ski Area was groomed to perfection, as usual.
There were also spaghetti dinners, events tied to Long Lake's "Winter Wacky Week," (kids off from school need to keep busy AND exercise outdoors!), and a lot of post-activity gatherings over beers.
We received still more snow this week. That just fine, but I'm looking forward to some climate shock. This weekend my husband and I fly to southern latitutdes. I love snow, but I'm not going to complain about a little sun, surf and sand.
