Speculator, located on Lake Pleasant, is as busy in winter with snowmobilers and skiers as it is in summer with seasonal residents, hikers, paddlers, and people who enjoy the views. Everyone visits Charlie John's Store, a grocery store with topo maps, camping equipment, seasonal goods, or the Speculator Department Store in summer or winter. Stop at the Perks of Speculator or Timberline for a latte and pastry. Have breakfast at the Sunrise Diner or pizza at Firetower. For an excellent dining experience, try The Acorn, Logan’s, or the Inn at Speculator.
The county's 750 miles of groomed snowmobile trails, including Fawn Lake to Oxbow Lake and Perkins Clearing, are accessible from or close to the village. Oak Mountain Ski Area has welcomed downhill skiers for a half-century. Fourteen trails are served by a quad lift and two t-bars, including the one that drags kids (and everyone else) to the top of the tubing hill. In the summer, the community beach and canoe launch take center stage. Camp-of-the-Woods, a Christian resort, welcomes more than 700 visitors weekly during the season. The Lake Pleasant School is a fantastic school with dedicated and educated staff that love the children and care about their education. The school serves children in grades K – 8.
