Indian Lake is the most populous town in Hamilton County. The hamlet evolved in the wake of rough lumber camps and even rougher lumberjacks. There were only scattered settlers in the 1840's but by the 1870's, the civilizing effect of tourism had joined lumbering as an economic driver. The hamlet is closer to Lakes Adirondack and Abanake than its 12 mile-long namesake, and eastern access to the Moose River Plains begins where the Cedar River Rd. ends. The Indian Lake Theater has been restored as a performance and meeting space, with first-run and art house films shown on weekends when there are no performances. It joins Pine's Store (if they haven't got it, you don't need it) and several restaurants as downtown anchors in an active campaign to revitalize Main Street. Indian Lake hosts an annual antiques show as well as the Moose Festival. Indian Lake is the only hamlet in the county with two golf courses, Wakely Lodge and Cedar River.
