Wells is a pretty hamlet bisected by Lake Algonquin, an impoundment of the Sacandaga River. Because it was the most prosperous of Hamilton County's towns in the mid-1800's, its main street looks and feels like New England. The scenery, however, anchors it in the Adirondack Park. There is a public beach and paddling opportunities on the east branch of the Sacandaga.
The high school that serves Lake Pleasant and Wells is located on Rt. 30. Local businesses include Hamilton County Cable TV, Bureau Logging, Excavation and Construction and its model log home, Mountain Memories, which offers breakfast, lunch and gifts.
