Speculator on Lake Pleasant is almost as busy in winter with snowmobilers and skiers as it is in the summer with seasonal residents, hikers, paddlers, and people who just enjoy the views. Summer or winter, everyone visits Charlie John's Store, a grocery store with topo maps, camping equipment and seasonal goods, or the Speculator Department Store, with Pendleton clothing and gifts.
The county's 750 miles of groomed snowmobile trails include Fawn Lake to Oxbow Lake, Perkins Clearing and Big Brook Trails, accessible from or close to the village. Oak Mountain Ski Area has welcomed downhill skiers for a half century. Fourteen trails are served by a quad lift and two t-bars, including the one that drags kids (and everyone else) to the top of the tubing hill. In the summer, the community beach and canoe launch take center stage. Camp-in-the-Woods, a Christian resort, welcomes more than 700 visitors every week during the season. The Lake Pleasant School, K – 9, serves several communities; a new facility was built in 2002.
