Buttermilk Falls outside of Long Lake may be the best known of the dozens of waterfalls found in the county. Lately, more and more people have been asking for the "Waterfall Challege" brochure we offer through the tourism office. Some 18 waterfall destination hikes are described. Most are easy. Picture yourself beside a rush of cool water . . .

Hamilton County just filed a grant application for funding to complete broadband installation in most of its hamlets. This should be accomplished by the end of 2013. It involves hanging a lot of fiber optic cable. In the meantime, most of us have DSL. Cell phone coverage will take more time. Mountains and trees get in the way, and some cellular service providers are reluctant to spend money

This week has been hot for the Adirondacks. Not as hot as downstate, of course, but temperatures in the 80's feel hot to me. I'm not accustomed to temperatures in the 90's with 80 percent humidity. When I get hot, it's easy to hit the water around here – 3,000 ponds and lakes, most with public access. I had a meeting at the Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake earlier this week. The history museum is nationally-known and highly regarded, called "the best of its kind" by the New York Times. Meeting concluded, I visited some of the 22 exhibit spaces and historic buildings on the huge campus. Things are always changing at the Museum, and I wanted to check out a few favorite exhibits as well (

      Got a call this afternoon that a moose had been spotted near Lake Pleasant School. I jumped in the car with my camera.
